Call of Duty 3  Reviews

1.    Call of Duty 3 isn't just another first-person shooter that takes place during World War II. It's a fantastic game with great online play and top-notch sound

World War II may have ended in 1945, but that hasn't stopped the axis and allies from waging war against one another on the video game front.

While Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners worried about Treyarch taking over the reins for Call of Duty 3, PlayStation 2 and Xbox owners already had a good idea of what to expect since the developer was behind the enjoyable Call of Duty 2: Big Red One for the PS2 and Xbox.

Thanks to an intense single-player campaign, great sound, and deep online options, Call of Duty 3 plays better than its predecessor and is an all-around great first-person shooter.

After landing successfully on the beaches of France, the allied focus was on getting the Germans out of France and liberating Paris, which was under Nazi control at the time.

As was the case in the last game, you're placed in the role of several different soldiers and you'll participate in campaigns for America, Britain, Canada, and Poland.

The game opens with a brief training mission where you'll learn how to fire weapons and throw grenades, as well as how to move around.

For precision aiming, you'll want to pull the left trigger or L1, which raises your gun to eye level and lets you use the weapon's sight.

You can also perform a melee attack with your weapon if you find yourself out of ammo or simply don't have time to aim.

When you get out of the truck, or rather are blown out of the truck by an explosion, you're boosted over the cemetery wall.

Mission objectives are varied but don't stray far from what you'd expect from the type of first-person shooter that takes place in World War II.

Sometimes you'll simply need to get from point A to point B, while other times you'll need to defend an area from attack, rescue hostages, or plant explosives.

You'll also have to use your binoculars to mark targets for air strikes, man stationary guns, and even ride in the back of a jeep and pick off bad guys with the jeep's machine gun.

2.    Call of Duty 3

Call of Duty 3, has arrived and it's prepared to blow you away with some explosive gameplay, ultra-realistic graphics, incredible sound, and a few twists...Call of Duty 3 breaks new ground in several areas, both technically, and from a design perspective. Unlike last year's game where you bounced around from campaign to campaign, country to country, you now play a single campaign, the 1944 Normandy Breakout, one of the most crucial and brutal battles of WWII. Along with the US and British troops, Call of Duty 3 also introduces us to the Canadians and the Polish who also play vital roles in this campaign...

3.    A Worthy Member of the Call of Duty Series

You're barely off on your first trip when shells are landing, guns are hammering in your ears and there is complete chaos.

You have to be careful not to hit a friendly while you're blasting away at the bad guys.

Call of Duty 3 does a great job of giving you a WWII environment with character.

You can see the smoke drifting across the main street, the plunks of rain as it falls through the boards.

When you want to whap someone in the head with your gun, you just give the controller a sharp twist.

Even if you're an uber-soldier and whip through the main gameplay in a short period of time, there is still the online side, which can keep you going for *months*.

4.    Of Course You Realize This Means War

The downfall is that you can only play in single player mode unless you want to do/are set up for online play.

You're mostly shooting whichever weapon you happen to have picked up (mostly from dead soldiers on the ground) along your objective route (a barrage of automatics and rifles).

So if you figure out how to unlock them all like we did, there's no reason to play them chronologically (perhaps at least for consistency chapters 1 & 14 should be played respectively first and last).

So all in all Call of Duty 3 is intensely fun, but like I said earlier, the biggest drawback to this awesome game is that multiplayer mode is only available with online play.

5.    A great place to start your PS3 experience

The graphics are great IF you have a HDTV AND a digital connection.

After getting an HDMI cable to get the job done, I saw some great graphics.

Smoke grenades produce volumetric smoke, you can see great facial expressions on the faces of your comrades, good stuff.

With the basic video cables, eh, it was PS2 worthy.

As another reviewer said, the wrist flick for a rifle butt strike is pretty neat.

You also end up using the controller to fight in hand to hand combat, drive a jeep, paddle a boat and plant explosives.

It really does add something to the game.
